About Virginia Beach
Virginia Beach, VA is located on the Atlantic Ocean, at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. It is the largest and most populous city in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area of Virginia, with a population of 440,415 as reported in 2008. The area has a long history - it was first colonized in 1607 when Captain Christopher Newport and his three ships carrying 105 men and boys made landfall. Over the next couple of centuries, the area attracted many people to the beautiful coastal area, but it wasn't until the late 1800s when rail service and electricity were available that it truly became an international resort area. Virginia Beach is best known as a resort city, and for its beach "strip" which is listed in Guinness Book of Records as the world's longest pleasure beach. But, there are many other activities to enjoy. For instance, tennis, golf, boating, fishing and bicycling, are favorite pastimes, to name just a few. You'll also like to visit the city parks with playgrounds and ballfields, and the skate park at Mt. Trashmore. Mt. Trashmore is the highest point in Virginia Beach and was constructed from alternating layers of waste and clean soil. Virginia Beach is also home to several large military installations, including the US Navy's NAB Oceana, US Army's Fort Story, and the FTC Dam Neck. Most of the Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek lies within the greater Virginia Beach area. NAB Little Creek and the FTC Dam Neck are the largest bases of their kind in the world. As you might imagine, the climate in Virginia beach is "subtropical", and the weather is affected by close proximity to the ocean. Winters here are usually mild, and snowfall is rare.
