About Virginia Beach Schools
Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) is the largest school system in the Hampton Roads area and serves nearly 70,000 students in grades K-12. One of the most common questions for home buyers is: Which schools will my child attend? If you want your children to attend a particular high school, for example, you need to purchase a home in that school's zone. - You can easily identify the assigned elementary, middle, or high school for an address by searching the online Virginia Beach school locator. At present, VBCPS has 56 elementary schools, 14 middle schools, and 11 high schools. It also supports several secondary/post secondary specialty education centers. Among them is an Adult Learning Center, the Renaissance Academy, Advanced Technology Center, and the Technical and Career Education Center. Academic programs are offered at several schools. For instance, a Mathematics & Science Academy is offered to students at Linkhorn Elementary, Foreign Language Partial Immersion Academy is available for students at Christopher Farms Elementary, and a gifted program is offered at Old Donation Center. The Middle Years International Baccalaureate Program is presented to students at Plaza Middle School, and a gifted program is also available at Kemps Landing Magnet School. International Baccalaureate Programs for high school students are offered at Princess Anne High School. A Mathematics and Science Academy is offered at Ocean Lakes High School. Other high school students have the opportunity to enroll in health science academy at Bayside High. Technology Academy is available at Landstown. And the Visual & Performing Arts Academy is offered at Salem High. Tallwood High offers students a Global Studies and World Languages Program. All schools have a 2:1 student to computer ratio. All high schools, middle schools, and the Advanced Technology Center have distance learning labs, and online courses which are available during the regular school year as well as during summer school. Virginia Beach Schools Have High Standards for Education Virginia Beach schools are proud of their accomplishments. For the 2008-2009 school year, 63 of the 81 eligible schools received awards of excellence from the Virginia Board of Education and Governor Tim Kaine. - Green Run, Rosemont, and W.T. Cooke elementary schools earned the 2009 Title I Distinguished School honors.
- First Colonial, Frank W. Cox, Kellam, Kempsville, Ocean Lakes, and Princess Anne, were named among the top 6% in the nation in Newsweeks' annual report for 2007-2008.
- Creeds, John B. Dey, Green Run, Kingston, Old Donation Center, and Kemps Landing Magnet, Strawbridge, and Trantwood all received the prestigious Governor's Award for Educational Excellence from Governor Timothy Kaine.
SAT scores for the school year 2007-2009 rose in all three critical areas: reading, writing, and math. Since 2004-2005 school year, the percentage of VBCP students scoring a 3 or higher on Advanced Placement exams has exceeded both state and national averages. Eight-four percent of graduating seniors have post-secondary education plans. And these trends continue!
